Young the Giant has long been one of those indie-ish bands that are easy to like, but does anyone really love them? Ever since breakthrough single “Cough Syrup”, they have delivered well-crafted just-this-side-of-electro alt-rock, or perhaps just-this-side-of-alternative electro-rock. They’re great on a festival bill, but one can’t quite devote oneself to them. Mirror Master has them taking those steps.

Admittedly, the first half of Mirror is the same-old Young the Giant, from smooth opener “Superposition” to intimate echo “Darkest Shade of Blue”, songs that you’ll definitely enjoy listening to, and struggle to remember afterwards. But the back half sees the band raise their game. Their brightness is delivered better on “Brother’s Keeper” and “You + I”, while there’s a Middle Eastern touch to “Glory”. And the titular closer is great, energetic fun.
Young the Giant are likely a few too many years removed from their breakout to get a whole new swath of fans (that period is getting smaller & smaller…). But they’re reaching for more on Mirror Master.
