"RIYL The 13th Floor Elevators" is an understatement. The Michigan-based band The People’s Temple hits the southern psych-blues flutter on the nose with their new album Sons Of Stone. Expect a few sonic curveballs though. The band is made up of two pairs of brothers and that family vibe (see White Mystery) always seems to play a bit freer when it comes to genre. Witness the title track "Sons of Stone," which the band plays straight once as a late 60s pop anthem, and revists later in the album as a righteous Stone Roses-esque drum circle remix. "Axe Man" pays homage to classic Bowie, "Mephedrone" strikes up a noise seance, "11 Miles Away" slams the pedal to the MC5 metal — but we’re highlighting the bongo-led jam "Keeper (of Souls)" because 60s psych vibes are the true golden calf of The People’s Temple.
