Lollapalooza 2017 Preview

Lollapalooza just keeps getting bigger & bigger. Ever since converting from the touring festival it was in the nineties to the massive event it is now, Lollapalooza has been a mainstay at Chicago’s Grant Park. Last year, for its 25th anniversary, the festival expanded to a fourth day (making for some very long weekends…), and has kept that in 2017, Thursday-Sunday, August 3rd-7th:

THURSDAY, AUGUST 3rd

Bud Light Stage

Lorde, 8:45 PM – 10:00 PM

It’s been fast and furious, the success of Lorde (QRO live review). The New Zealand songstress (QRO photos) is barely out of her teens, but blew up in a huge way in 2013 behind Grammy-winning single “Royals” and Pure Heroine. Her Lollapalooza performance the next year (QRO photos at Lollapalooza ’14) was unfortunately during the day, but even by then she was at should-be-headlining status. She’s become such a megastar that her actually being Randy Marsh was a season-song story line on South Park (“I am Lorde, yah-yah-yah…”).

Lorde understandably took a break after all of that, but returned this year with strong follow-up Melodrama (QRO review). So catch the voice that’s turning heads around the world (QRO photos) and at festivals (QRO photos at a festival).
Lorde
Wiz Khalifa, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM

The Pittsburgh singer/rapper upset about as many fans as he gained with his move from stoner rap into bona-fide pop music, but he is what he is. Wiz (QRO photos outdoors) makes music that’s fun to listen to, including his team-up with Snoop Dogg, Mac & Devin Go To High School (QRO review), or his hit Furious 7 single “See You Again”, even if it’s rarely thought provoking or based in anything other than weed or girls. One thing’s for certain, he (QRO photos) will never run out of marijuana-based puns.
Wiz Khalifa
Migos, 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Quarvo, Takeoff and Offset together form hip-hop group Migos, and come to Lollapalooza behind this year’s Culture and chart-topping hit “Bad and Boujee” – with vocals from fellow Lollapalooza ’17 performer Lil Uzi Vert (see below), so look for a guest appearance on Thursday.

Jon Bellion, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Rapper/singer/producer Jon Bellion has worn a lot of hats, and put on a lot of mixtapes, but only one actual studio album, The Human Condition – which did debut at #5 on the Billboard charts.
Jon Bellion
Capital Cities, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Enjoy the exciting and excitable electro-pop of Capital Cities (QRO photos at a festival), who come to Lollapalooza after playing the likes of the Statue of Liberty (QRO live review), with word of a new record in the works.

Porter Robinson (QRO photos) has become one of the country’s most established DJs, even named MTVu ‘Artist of the Year’ in 2015.
Porter Robinson
Baauer, 7:00 PM – 8:15 PM

While Henry ‘Bauer’ Rodriguez (QRO photos at a festival) has been producing bass & electro music for years now, he only recently got big-time notice with his meme-spawning “Harlem Shake”. So expect the “Shake” back at Lollapalooza (though QRO would prefer to return of the gone-too-soon Harlem Shakes – QRO spotlight on…).
Baauer
A-Trak, 5:45 PM – 6:45 PM

Montreal’s Alain Macklovitch – a.k.a. A-Trak (QRO photos at a festival) – got notice when picked to be the personal DJ to none other than Kanye West, but has also produced for the likes of Lupe Fiasco & Kid Sister, as well as his work with Armand Van Helden as Duck Sauce (QRO photos at a festival). He returns to Lollapalooza for his first time since 2009.
A-Trak
Tritonal, 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM

Austin DJ/producers Chad Cisneros and David Reed form Tritonal, most recently on last year’s Painting With Dreams.

Cheat Codes, 3:30 PM – 4:15 PM

Electronic trio Cheat Codes (QRO photos at a festival) come to Lollapalooza fresh off the international success of hit single “Sex” (which samples Salt-n-Pepa’s 1991 classic “Let’s Talk About Sex”).
Cheat Codes
Paper Diamond, 2:30 PM – 3:15 PM

Colorado-based producer Alex B has been exploring his creating & performing side as Paper Diamond (QRO photos at a festival). He returns to Lollapalooza.

Spoon, 7:45 PM – 8:45 PM

As The Tick would shout, “Spoon!!!” Austin’s Spoon (QRO live review outdoors) has been turning heads in the indie-sphere for a while with their trademark indie-rock, but with 2007’s Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (QRO review), 2010’s Transference (QRO review) & 2014’s They Want My Soul (QRO review), the group (QRO photos at a festival) has launched into the stratosphere, including headlining at New York’s ultra-upscale Radio City Music Hall (QRO live review). A festival veteran (QRO photos at a festival), including headlining fests (QRO photos headlining a festival), they come to back to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at Lollapalooza ‘14), now behind last spring’s release of Hot Thoughts (QRO review). Three cheers for “The Underdog” (QRO video)!
Spoon
George Ezra, 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM

Things have blossomed very fast for singer/songwriter George Ezra (QRO photos at a festival), after his international hit single “Budapest”. He returns for his second Lollapalooza in three years.
George Ezra
The Drums, 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM

The indie-pop of Brooklyn’s The Drums (QRO live review) mixes new wave, girl-group, Sweden, electro, and, above all, reverb, for something unique (QRO photos at a festival). The group (QRO photos at a festival) comes back to Lollapalooza behind this year’s Abysmal Thoughts, and bring their killer live show (QRO live review) as well.

Muse, 8:45 PM – 10:00 PM

Devon’s Muse (QRO photos at a festival) is now established as full-fledged mega-stars. The trio reached for true stadium glory with 2009’s The Resistance (QRO review), as their electric bombast, which had already conquered Europe, set its sights on the States, playing Saturday Night Live (QRO Music on Late Night TV) and headlining Madison Square Garden (QRO photos). Yet 2012 was in even bigger, with the gigantic (in every sense of the word) The 2nd Law (QRO review) – not to mention making the official song for the London Olympics, “Survival”. 2015 saw Drones top charts in U.K. & America, and win the Grammy for Best Rock Album. They’re completely suitable to headline Lollapalooza for a third time.
Muse
Cage the Elephant, 6:30 PM – 7:45 PM

With hardly a full-length album to their name, Kentucky’s own Cage the Elephant (QRO photos) was snatched up by EMI Records at a low-key SXSW showcase. Following some impressive U.K. airplay, the band packed up and moved to London, where they released their first studio album in 2008. The following two years were a haze of international touring, late night TV shows, festival appearances (QRO photos at a festival) – and preparation for 2011’s Thank You, Happy Birthday, following that up with 2013’s more indie-influenced Melophobia and 2015’s Dan Auerbach-produced Tell Me I’m Pretty (which won the Grammy for Best Rock Album). They have also become a wild festival presence, like at Lollapalooza before (QRO photos at Lollapalooza ’14). As their blues-y rock infused live show will prove (QRO photos), elephants were never meant to be caged (QRO photos).
Cage the Elephant
Liam Gallagher, 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM

One of the most recognizable figures in modern rock, everyone already knows Liam Gallagher from his time quintessential Brit-rock outfit Oasis with his brother/guitarist/frenemy Noel. The sibling rivalry & fighting between the two was the stuff of U.K. tabloid legend, almost as famous as songs like “Wonderwall” and “Don’t Look Back In Anger” (which Noel wrote, as he’d be quick to point out…).

Noel left Oasis in 2009 for his own High Flying Birds (QRO live review), while Liam and the rest of the band formed Beady Eye (QRO photos at a festival), which didn’t get the same level of critical acclaim. Beady Eye disbanded in 2014 (with other members reforming Ride – QRO live review), but now Liam comes back on his own with solo debut As You Were.
Liam Gallagher
Temples, 2:30 PM – 3:30 PM

Despite only starting a few years ago, Temples (QRO live review) have received press attention in their native England after being called the best new band in Britain (QRO photos at a U.K. festival) by the likes of Noel Gallagher (QRO live review – don’t tell his brother Liam – see right above) and Johnny Marr (QRO live review). They come back to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival) after that heat died down a bit, with 2014’s unimpressive psych Sun Structures (QRO review) and this year’s Volcano (QRO review).

FRIDAY, AUGUST 4th

Bud Light Stage

Blink-182, 8:45 PM – 10:00 PM

Emerging from the southern California punk scene, Blink-182 (QRO photos) kept things light with their youthful energy and humor, and became MTV mainstays with “What’s My Again?”, Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, and more. They grew up a bit at the start of this century/millennium’s first decade, before singer/guitarist Tom DeLonge left and the group entered into “indefinite hiatus” (which saw drummer Travis Barker at one time get his own MTV reality series). But Barker, DeLonge, and singer/bassist Mark Hoppus reunited (QRO photos at a festival) in 2011 for the well received return Neighborhoods (QRO review), before DeLonge left again in 2015 (to pursue his interest in the UFO cover-up conspiracy…). So Barker & Hoppus recruited Alkaline Trio singer Matt Skiba to keep it going, including last year’s California (and being the wise act to drop out of the debacle that was Fyre Festival before it happened).
Blink-182
Foster the People, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Los Angeles’ Foster the People (QRO photos at a festival) came out of nowhere in 2010 with viral hit “Pumped Up Kicks”, followed that up with the Top Ten debut Torches (QRO review). Their listener- and dancer-friendly electronic sounds (QRO photos at a festival) aren’t exactly revelatory, but are sure to set the crowd on fire (QRO live review). They come back to Lollapalooza (QRO photos a Lollapalooza ’14) for a big show (QRO photos at a festival) behind 2014’s Supermodel (QRO review) and this year’s Sacred Hearts Club.
Foster the People
Tegan & Sara, 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Identical twin sisters Tegan and Sara (QRO interview) Quinn emerged out of Calgary at a young age over a decade ago (QRO spotlight on), and are coming back to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival) behind their eighth record, Love You To Death (QRO review). It and the previous Heartthrob (QRO review) launched the indie duo (QRO live review) into electro-pop stardom (helped by contributing to Lego Movie’s awesome, Oscar-nominated song, “Everything Is Awesome!!!”), after a hiatus following the end of their touring behind 2009’s Sainthood (QRO review).

The duo manages to combine both the mature songstress(es) style and today’s indie-rock (QRO live review) – along with some great between song banter (QRO live review). They’ve been everywhere in the world (QRO photos at a festival on the other side of the world) – from French-speaking Montreal (QRO photos) to Major League Baseball’s ‘Fan Cave’ (QRO photos), from Amnesty International’s ‘Bring Human Rights Home’ event (QRO photos) with Pussy Riot to Middle America (QRO photos) to Village Voice Pride Awards (QRO recap).
Tegan & Sara
Cloud Nothings, 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Young Dylan Baldi (QRO photos) throws back to music older than he as Cloud Nothings (QRO live review) with 2012’s Attack On Memory (QRO review), 2014’s Here and Nowhere Else (QRO review), and this year’s Life Without Sound (QRO review), and brings his power-pop to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival).

Ryan Adams, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM

The alt-country/rock artist broke out in the first years of this century/millennium when he went alone, finding major success in the country/rock mainstream, but Ryan Adams (QRO photos) eventually embraced his backing band, The Cardinals, and kept on writing. After 2008’s Cardinology and tour, Adams announced he was leaving The Cardinals again, as well as going on a hiatus due to hearing loss and disillusionment with today’s music industry, but returned in 2011 with Ashes & Fire, 2014’s acclaimed self-titled record, 2015’s top-to-bottom cover of Taylor Swift’s 1989 (QRO review), and this year’s Prisoner (QRO review), and is now hitting the festival circuit (QRO photos at a festival), returning to Lollapalooza for the first time since 2006.
Ryan Adams
Kaleo, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM

In music, Iceland is mostly known for its pioneering and experimental artists (and a number of great festivals on its own), but it’s also got a strong blue-rock scene, like Kaleo (QRO photos), who make it to Lollapalooza.

Crystal Castles, 9:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Most electronic acts are restrained on stage, even when their crowd is going nuts, but the duo of Ethan Kath & Alice Glass (QRO live review) long matched their audience’s fervor – which had gotten them booted from more than one stage, especially at festivals (QRO photos at a festival). Glass split in 2014, but Kath decided to keep the group going, recruiting replacement Edith Frances to a rather mixed reaction (QRO photos at a recent festival). So even if you fall on the ‘hate’ side of this love-them-or-hate-them act (from Canada, surprisingly…), show up for the spectacle… (QRO live review)
Crystal Castles
Whitney, 7:45 PM – 8:30 PM

Shortly after Max Kakacek & Julien Ehrlich’s young Smith Westerns (QRO photos at a festival) broke up, the pair formed their new outfit, Whitney (QRO photos at a festival). And they’ve certainly grown up, as debut Light Upon the Lake was one of the best records of last year (QRO Top Albums of 2016).

Majid Al Maskati and Jordan Ullman form Toronto’s synthwave R&B duo Majid Jordan.

The Killers (QRO photos) broke out of their Las Vegas home in 2004 with debut Hot Fuss and great singles “Somebody Told Me” and “Mr. Brightside” – and have failed to match that since. 2006’s attempt at greatness Sam’s Town didn’t make it, and after 2008’s middling Day & Age (QRO review) singer Brandon Flowers went solo for his own middling work. But the group has since come back (QRO photos) with 2012’s Battle Born (QRO review) and the upcoming Wonderful Wonderful – and they still play Hot Fuss live (QRO live review). They return for their fourth Lollapalooza.

Run the Jewels, 6:45 PM – 7:45 PM

El-P blew up the Brooklyn rap scene with 2013’s Cancer 4 Cure (QRO review of release party), and brought about his team-up with Killer Mike (QRO photos at a festival) for 2012’s ‘Into the Wild’ tour. Mike & P have deepened that connection (QRO photos at a festival), working together as Run the Jewels (QRO photos at a festival) for two critically acclaimed records, most recently 2015’s Run the Jewels 2 and this year’s critically- and commercially-acclaimed Run the Jewels 3. It’s been really enjoyable watching this duo just love life as they get bigger & bigger (QRO photos from this year), as they return to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival).

Phantogram, 4:45 PM – 5:45 PM

Saratoga Springs’ dancetronica act Phantogram (QRO photos at a festival) got notice less for their debut full-length Eyelid Movies (QRO review) than their enchanting live show (QRO photos at a festival) – which works outdoors (QRO photos outdoors at a festival), at least when in the evening (QRO photos at a festival). 2014’s Voices (QRO review) upped their game (QRO photos at a festival), after which they teamed up with Big Boi as ‘Big Grams’ (QRO photos at a festival). SATURDAY, AUGUST 5th

Bud Light Stage

The xx, 8:45 PM – 10:00 PM

Almost overnight, south London’s The xx (QRO photos) went from little known to massive acclaim. Even before debut record xx (QRO review) actually came out, the dark, post-punk revival act was garnering lots of attention (QRO photos at a festival). They quickly jumped from opening (QRO live review) to headlining, as they were overshadowing the headliners. They also saw Baria Qureshi depart (QRO photos with her), leaving them a three-piece (QRO photos at a festival), Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Sim, and Jamie Smith (who’s become famed DJ in his own right as Jamie xx – QRO photos at a festival).

Certainly subdued, they are much better suited for nighttime (QRO photos at a festival) than at chattering rock clubs (QRO video), but have found a way to make it work outdoors (QRO live review outdoors) and at festivals far and wide (QRO photos at a festival). The group (QRO photos) comes back to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival) behind this year’s I See You (QRO review) and big tour (QRO live review of U.K. tour kick-off), following 2012’s Coexist (QRO review).

The Head and The Heart, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Things have been seriously booming for The Head and The Heart (QRO live review). The Seattle alt-folk/pop band (QRO photos outdoors) was signed by Sub Pop (QRO photos outdoors), named their city’s best new band by Seattle Weekly, opened for everybody from Dave Matthews to Death Cab for Cutie. They since graduated to headlining status (QRO live review) behind 2013’s sweet Let’s Be Still (QRO review) – though their crowds never were (QRO photos at a festival). They come back to Lollapalooza for a third time, behind last year’s Signs of Light (QRO review).

Two mixtapes, 2012’s 10 Day and 2013’s Acid Rap, have launched Chicago’s own Chance the Rapper (QRO photos at a festival) into the big time (like an endearing Kit Kat commercial, and his Chicago-sponsored South-by-Southwest showcase in 2015 was shut down due to massive overcrowding – QRO recap). He comes home to Chicago (QRO photos) to headline Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival) behind his latest collaboration, last year’s team-up with Jeremih, Merry Christmas Lil’ Mama, and his Grammy-winning mixtape, Coloring Book. Book was the first streaming-only album ever to get a Grammy nomination, let alone a win – oh, and he also won the Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance!

This will be a hometown show for made-good boy, so expect big things as Chance returns for his third Lollapalooza, now as headliner!
Chance the Rapper
alt-J, 6:15 PM – 7:30 PM

Among all the overnight alt-successes, maybe no one has done it as quickly or as majorly as alt-J (QRO live review). Also known as ‘∆’ – that’s what you get when press the ‘alt’ and ‘J’ buttons on your keyboard – the indie-more quartet went from playing tiny places at terrible hours in 2012 (QRO photos) to winning their native England’s prestigious Mercury Prize later that year (QRO photos at a U.K. festival), and playing America (QRO photos at a North American festival) at much, much larger spaces (QRO photos). Grouplove, 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM

In 2012 rock collective Grouplove (QRO spotlight on) have had two of the most enjoyable recent hits, “Tongue Tied” (QRO video) and “Colours” (QRO review) from the debut Never Trust a Happy Song (QRO photos at a festival). Live, they take it to another level (QRO live review), with a massive spectacle (QRO photos outdoors at a festival), and can even persevere in the rain (QRO live review in the rain) or on television (QRO live review at TV taping). The band (QRO interview) followed that up in 2013 with Spreading Rumors (QRO review) and tour (QRO live review), and singles like “I’m With You” and “Shark Attack” (QRO review). Then lead singers Hannah Hooper & Christian Zucconi (QRO interview with both) had a child, Willow – who has accompanied them on tour (QRO live review) behind last year’s Big Mess (QRO review). Now they return to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at Lollapalooza ’14).
Grouplove
London Grammar, 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM

Actually from Nottingham (QRO photos at a northern U.K. festival), London Grammar (QRO photos at a festival) jumped to the top of the U.K. charts with their winning electronic pop on 2013’s full-length debut, If You Wait. The group comes back to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at Lollapalooza ‘14) behind this year’s Truth Is a Beautiful Thing.
London Grammar
Charli XCX, 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM

Charlotte Aitchison, under the moniker Charli XCX (QRO photos at a festival), is one of Britain’s most elusive dark pop songstresses (QRO photos at a festival). Already after opening slots on big-name tours as well as festivals (QRO photos at a festival), not to mention co-writing the breakthrough song for Icona Pop (QRO spotlight on), “I Love It”, she started to solidify her career as a pop songwriter to be reckoned with (QRO photos), with 2013 seeing her release her debut full-length, True Romance, and playing her own headlining gigs (QRO photos). Two years ago she achieved her own breakthrough single, “Break the Rules”, on sophomore full-length Sucker, and comes back to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at Lollapalooza ’15) on her ‘Number 1 Angel’ Tour.

Arcade Fire, 8:30 PM – 10:00 PM

After making the biggest indie-smash since The Strokes with the already-seminal Funeral back in 2004/2005, and leading the charge of the ‘Canadian Invasion’, Montreal’s own Arcade Fire (QRO live review) followed that up in 2007 with the excellent-even-if-it-couldn’t-be-Funeral Neon Bible (QRO review). But after playing to bigger-and-bigger-and-bigger venues (QRO live review outdoors), the massive ensemble took a much-needed break, yet they returned in 2010 (QRO photos of first U.S. show in three years), and as one of the biggest bands in indie-rock (QRO photos at a festival), with The Suburbs (QRO review), which managed to win the Grammy for Record of the Year.

Of course, that meant hipsters were obligated to hate the band (QRO photos headlining Madison Square Garden), and unfortunately some of that came true in 2014 with Reflektor (QRO review). A double-album where the band now follows the trend of indie going disco-dance, it divided critics, and coupled with a massive promotional push that included not only the season premiere of Saturday Night Live but a special afterwards (QRO Music On Late Night TV), not to mention Kimmel on top of the Capitol Records building and similarly divisive intimate shows (where they required the crowd to dress up, fooled on where the stage was, and did no encores) grabbing attention during the new music fest CMJ (QRO recap), it all almost seemed designed to jump the shark.

However, not only is the music still great, but also so is the live show (QRO photos at a festival), and they come to Lollapalooza right after the release of their anticipated Everything Now (QRO review), so catch them headlining Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival) once again.

The Shins, 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM

The Shins (QRO photos) are back! The Shins are back! The band (QRO live review) that caused Zach Braff (and the world) to fall in love with Natalie Portman in Garden State had one of the most-anticipated & best-received records of 2007 in Wincing the Night Away (QRO review). Then the band (QRO photos) left label Sub Pop, and soon started losing members around main man James Mercer, who eventually put The Shins on hold to work with Danger Mouse as the middling Broken Bells (QRO album review).

But Mercer & whoever makes up the rest of The Shins (QRO photos at a festival) came back, reclaiming their indie crown with 2012’s great Port of Morrow (QRO review), and again played big stages (and big shows, like Austin City LimitsQRO live review on Austin City Limits) and big festivals (QRO photos at a festival). Mercer took time off for another, better, Broken Bells record (QRO review), but returned this year for another great Shins record, Port of Morrow (QRO review) and are perfect to play the center of the country (QRO photos at a Middle American festival) in their return to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival).
The Shins
Tove Lo, 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM

Out of Stockholm, Ebba Tove Lesa Nilsson – a.k.a. Tove Lo (QRO photos at a festival) – has written for numerous other artists like Icona Pop, Ellie Goulding, and Hilary Duff, but 2013 hit single “Habits” has made her a leading lady all of her own (QRO photos at a festival). She returns to Lollapalooza for his second time in three years (QRO photos at Lollapalooza ’15).
